Two pairs of Chinese and American table tennis players will team up as a mixed doubles partner to play in the World Table Tennis Championships to be held in Houston, USA. At a time when Sino-US relations are in the doldrums, this event echoes the “ping-pong diplomacy” that broke the ice in the relations between the two countries 50 years ago.
The Sino-US mixed doubles are: China’s Lin Gaoyuan and the United States’ Zhang An; as well as the United States’ Kanak and China’s Wang Manyu.
According to the official website of the China Table Tennis Association, the two combinations were unveiled at the ITTF 50th Anniversary Dinner held yesterday (21st).
The report quoted ITTF Group CEO Denton as saying: “We have once again witnessed the unique power of sports in Houston, and how table tennis creates dialogue and promotes mutual understanding. This will inspire us to demonstrate an extraordinary and historical significance. The World Table Tennis Championships and support the dreams, hopes and ambitions of the entire table tennis industry and the next generation.”
Liu Guoliang, Chairman of the World Table Tennis Professional League Council and Chairman of the China Table Tennis Association, is a key figure in the Sino-US mixed doubles match.
