Maverick McNealy holed the final hole for an eagle and shot an 8-under 64 Friday at silvercity Resort North to move into the Flying Tower Championship lead.
The 25-year-old American suffered three bogeys in a row after the break but rebounded with four birdies to finish 12-under 132 (68-64) for a two-shot lead.
Half way to the top
Beau Hossler also shot 64, but had a clean scorecard with eight birdies for a two-round score of 10-under 134, tied for second place with Mito Pereira. Mitto Pereira moved up to the PGA Tour earlier this year after three wins on the Korn Ferry International. He birdied every putt on the final hole to shoot 67 for the second straight day.
Will Zalatoris, who not long ago won the PGA Tour rookie of the Year award, birdied two of his last two holes for five birdies on his way to a bogey-free 67 to tie Troy Merritt, 68) and Bronson Burgoon (67) tied for fourth place at 9-under 135.
U.S. PGA Championship champion Mickelson shot a 69 for a two-round 139 and is tied for 24th place. Chinese Taipei’s Pan Zhengcong is also in this category. He started on the back nine and had four birdies before his turn, including a 27-foot putt on the 15th.
Chinese-american Dylan Wu also made the cut at 4-under 140 (70-70), tied for 38th.
Unfortunately, world Number one Jon Rahm was forced to withdraw from the pro/Amateur pga tour due to illness before the tournament. Today, three birdies and two bogeys, shot 71, two rounds of 143, one under par, two shots off the cut line, missed the cut.
Biyuan Ng was 2-over at 146 (71-75) and Kevin Yu was 5-over at 149 (71-78) to be eliminated.
